Am I old enough to have sex?

Growing up is a legal minefield and you'll spend most of your teenage years tiptoeing carefully towards a time when you can officially drink, drive and vote. The law even affects what goes on in your bedroom - so it's best to make sure you understand the rules before things get too cosy.

The age at which you're legally allowed to have sex is known as the age of consent and differs from country to country. In England, Scotland and Wales, it's 16 years old for both homosexual ('gay') and heterosexual ('straight') sex. However, in Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland it's 17. Interestingly, the law says that sex is not just intercourse but also includes oral sex and mutual masturbation.

If you have sex before 16 in the eyes of the law it's sexual assault - a criminal offence. In the UK, this carries serious penalties; a boy who has sex with a girl under 16 (even if she agrees to it) can be charged with 'statutory rape' and could go to prison. If the girl is younger than 13 he could face spending a long time in prison. Girls with boyfriends under the age of consent should also be aware they are breaking the law too and could be prosecuted for indecent assault.

Of course, this might seem unfair, why should the law mess around with your love life? Well, it's worth remembering that the rules are in place to protect you and your mates from abuse and to punish adults who might want to take advantage of you.

Of course, once you hit 16, you're legally old enough to have sex - except with someone who's in a position of trust over you like teachers, carers and doctors. But the minute you finish blowing out your birthday candles don't think you have to throw yourself straight into a wild sexual free-for-all. If you feel you're not ready don't rush into anything and be strong enough to stand by your decision.
