Personalise your school uniform – without getting sent home – by customising your school bag.
Make a bag charm
- Hit the haberdashery and pick up colourful ribbon and a bag charm clasp.
- Next scour charity shops or bead shops for funky vintage beads.
- Cut the ribbon into five 15cm strands and tie them to the clasp.
- Holding the strands together thread on medium and large sized beads till the ribbon is 6cm full.
- Now split the strands and thread small beads onto them separately.
- When you are happy with the length tie off the ends and voila, one totally unique bag charm.
Rep your favourite bands
- Get down to your local Army Surplus stockist and bag yourself a simple canvas satchel in a light colour.
- Next raid the art shop for fabric pens and glitter glue.
- Go on the internet to find the logos of your favourite bands and research inspiring song lyrics. Copy them onto your bag with the fabric pens.
- Put the pens in your bag when you’re finished. That way you can keep customising whenever inspiration hits!
Turn your bag into a photo album
Celebrate your mates by plastering their ugly mugs all over your bag.
- Get some pics of y’all pulling faces.
- Do black and white photocopies of the pics onto heat-transfer paper, (get it from a good stationers).
- Iron the photocopies onto plain, coloured cotton for an Andy Warhol style effect.
- Now cut out the faces and stitch them onto your bag. You can cheat by using fabric glue instead, just be sure to stay out of the rain.
Being Girl top tip
Fabric shops sell leftover scraps of fabric for bargain-ous prices. Use a bit to make a secret inside pocket for your bag. Then you’ll have somewhere to stash your Tampax® Compak and Always® away from prying eyes.
