Frequently Asked Questions About Periods

When it comes to periods, you've got a lot of questions. Let's separate fact from fiction.

Does discharge in your underwear mean you're about to get your first period?

Yes and no. This milky, white discharge is a sign that you body is preparing itself for menstruation. However, it may occur several years before you actually get your first period. There's no hard and fast rule and experiences vary with different girls. Try not to obsess about getting your period – it will happen when you body is ready.

Do all women really suffer during menstruation?

Many women cope with menstrual cramps during menstruation. Again, there's no set rule: experiences differ and depend on the individual person. However, if it's at all comforting, most of us feel a bit moody and uncomfortable just before or after our periods.

If my period is irregular, does that mean something is wrong?

Usually, it takes a year or two before menstruation becomes regular. Therefore, don’t panic if your period suddenly seems to disappear for one to three months   If it is still irregular after the first 2 years, see your GP just to check things out.

Does taking The Pill regulate bleeding and lessen PMS?

Yes, it will. Hormonal contraception pills taken very regularly not only prevent pregnancy but also regulate the cycle of the period and weaken PSM symptoms. Talk to your GP if this seems promising to you.

Is it true that virgins shouldn’t insert tampons?

Totally untrue. The only way to lose your virginity is by having sex; it is not affected by your choice of period protection and certainly not by inserting tampons. So there’s no reason why you should not use tampons before you’re sexually active but you should remember tampons should only be used when you are on your period.

Is it true you can't get pregnant during your period?

Again, totally untrue. Whilst it's unlikely that you would become pregnant during your period it's not impossible - particularly in the middle of the menstrual cycle. Don't risk it and remember that unprotected sex also exposes you to a host of sexually-transmitted diseases.

Is it true you should always rest during your periods?

Nope, not true. Listen to your body and do whatever makes you feel good. Don't stop exercising just because you're on your period; in fact a little gentle exercise and stretching is really effective in relieving period pain.

Of course, if you find exercise is not helping menstrual cramps or making period pain worse then it may be best to see a doctor.

Is it true that you shouldn't wash your hair or body during your period?

Rubbish. Some girls sweat more during their periods. There's no reason not to stay clean and fresh during your period.
