We talked to celebrity fashion stylist, Hannah Sandling.
Hannah Sandling has made her name as a fashion and interiors stylist, as well as successfully turning her hand to TV presenting. We caught up with her to find out what it takes to be a stylist to stars like Sienna Miller, Carmen Electra, Atomic Kitten and Emma Bunton.
Beinggirl: What made you want to become a stylist and how did you get into it?
Hannah: I never set out to be a stylist – it was purely by accident. I’ve always been a creative person – a real Blue Peter hands-on type. When I was studying Art at University, I taught myself how to design scarves and cushions to help earn extra money. I was at a charity fair and got spotted by a Fashion Editor who asked me to assist her on a shoot. The rest is history.
Beinggirl: What do you love most about your job?
Hannah: It’s very satisfying. People come to me often feeling insecure about they way they look. By helping them on the outside with their appearance, I am also helping them on the inside with bigger issues such as confidence.
Beinggirl: And what are your least favourite things about it?
Hannah: The long days can be exhausting – especially if there is a lot of hanging around but, the key is to keep busy and watch other people at their craft so you can pick up useful tips and learn more related skills.
Beinggirl:What are the main qualities you need to do your job?
Hannah: You need to be creative, artistic and slightly off the wall. You need to have a good understanding of style and a lot of enthusiasm and passion. You must also not be afraid of hard work.
Beinggirl: What advice would you give to anyone who’s interested in becoming a stylist?
Hannah: Read as many fashion magazines as possible and treat them like your bible. Watch, learn and remain 100% enthusiastic at all times. Try to meet industry people and aim to get as much work experience as you possibly can.
